What is RF for spider veins?

RF cauterisation for spider veins and telangiectasias uses a tiny needle to pierce the spider vein and seal it shut through controlled heat. It’s a great option for veins that are too small for sclerotherapy injections or lack the hemoglobin required for proper Nd:YAG targeting. It is very well-tolerated, rarely requiring regional anaesthetic.

Process

We will pierce the spider vein using a tiny RFA needle, sending out heat bursts to seal it shut. The process takes 10-15 minutes, depending on the area we need to cover.

You’ll be able to leave our clinic right after your procedure and get back to your day. You may need 2-3 sessions for the best results.  You may also need sclerotherapy if feeder veins (i.e., larger veins ”feeding’ excess blood into the small surface veins) are present.

Benefits of RF Cauterisation for spider veins

  • Minimally invasive
  • Well-tolerated procedure
  • Effective for small spider veins and red telangiectasias
  • More effective than Nd:YAG for spider veins lacking haemoglobin
  • Better suited for smaller veins than sclerotherapy

How to prepare for your RF spider veins treatment

  • Avoid applying any lotions or creams to the treatment area on the day of the procedure
  • You may be asked to avoid taking certain medications a few days before your treatment
  • Wear clothing that is loose and comfortable, such as a skirt, dress, or track pants

What to do after your spider vein RF treatment

You can get back to most of your usual activities, though you should avoid exposing the treated area to direct sunlight. We also recommend walking 30 minutes a day for at least 5 days, drinking plenty of water, avoiding strenuous activities, and elevating your legs when you can. Note that these are general guidelines. Your clinician will advise on post-op care steps specific to you following your treatment.

Complications

RF cauterisation for spider veins is a low-risk procedure. However, as with any cosmetic treatment, complications can still occur. These include temporary skin redness, pain or discomfort, infection, swelling, and potential pigment changes. We strive to make your treatment with us as safe and comfortable as possible. We’ll discuss some options (such as over-the-counter pain relief, elevation, light exercise, and compression) to relieve potential side effects.
