If you’re thinking about getting spider vein removal, you’ll be happy to know that recovery is well-tolerated and straightforward. From compression socks to how long to stay away from strenuous exercise, here’s what to do after spider vein treatment and what to expect during recovery.
Common side effects
Our spider vein treatments include sclerotherapy, Nd:YAG, and the combination treatment CLaCS, which are well-tolerated. After a laser session, you can expect to feel like you would after laser hair removal. You may experience some redness and swelling in that area, but this should subside within a few days. After sclerotherapy, you may experience mild discomfort and bruising. After treatment, it’s essential to do the following steps to assist the healing process and make sure you’re comfortable.
What to do after spider vein treatment
Walk
Walking is a mild to moderate-intensity activity that stimulates the calf muscles, which are instrumental in pumping blood back up the heart. You should walk for about 30 minutes immediately after you leave our clinic. You should also walk for 30 minutes a day for at least 5 days, as it will help the body heal and may relieve some post-treatment side effects.
Cool pack or cream
These are especially helpful after laser treatment. While the Nd:YAG’s wavelength makes it excellent at targeting veins without damaging the skin, you may still feel some discomfort and warmth around the treated area. A great way to reduce it is to take heat off the skin by applying an ice pack wrapped in a tea towel for ~15 minutes, or gently applying some cooling cream.
No strenuous exercise for 3-5 days after spider vein treatment
Spider vein treatment shouldn’t disrupt your fitness routine too much, but if you do CrossFit, weightlift, play a team sport, or do another type of strenuous exercise, be prepared to take 3-5 days off.
Avoid sun exposure to the area for 2 weeks
The sun can break down collagen in the skin, resulting in greater discomfort after laser treatment. It can also cause or worsen pigmentation after sclerotherapy. If you can’t avoid exposing the treated area to sunlight, make sure to apply plenty of sunblock. Otherwise, stay in the shade when possible and wear appropriate clothing.
Travel restrictions
It’s best to avoid long hours of sitting or standing for a few days after your treatment. Long flights are especially hard on treated legs, as you’re pretty much confined to your seat. Hence, avoid long-haul flights (5+ hours) for a week post-treatment, and shorter flights for at least three days. If you plan on travelling overseas, let our medical team know so they can recommend the best steps and make adjustments to your treatment plan.
Compression after spider vein treatment
Typically, compression socks aren’t necessary after spider vein treatment. However, if you wish to wear a pair, they can help with swelling and aches that pop up after your procedure. Compression is especially beneficial to wear if you sit or stand a lot at work or need to travel.
What to do after spider vein treatment: the takeaway
Spider vein treatment recovery won’t impact your life much, but you’ll need to take a few steps for a more comfortable process and the best possible results. These include avoiding sun exposure, long travel, and strenuous exercise while making sure to walk and use cooling creams and compression if necessary.
