What is Nd:YAG?
Nd:YAG (neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet) is a NON-INVASIVE laser treatment for spider veins. The laser’s heat penetrates deep into the skin to shrink and seal the problem veins shut. Once they’re shut, your body will absorb them and reroute blood flow to nearby healthy veins.
Process
We will target the spider vein using the Nd:YAG laser, sending out heat bursts to seal it shut. For maximum comfort, we’ll also use a cooling system to take the laser heat away from the surface of your skin. All in all, the procedure will feel pretty similar to laser hair removal.
You’ll be able to leave our clinic right after your procedure and get back to your day. You may need 2-3 sessions for the best results. You may also need sclerotherapy if feeder veins (i.e., larger veins ”feeding’ excess blood into the small surface veins) are present.
Benefits of Nd:YAG laser for spider veins
- Non-invasive, meaning no injections necessary
- Well-tolerated procedure
- Effective for small spider veins
- More effective than Pulse Light Therapy for deeper spider veins
- Quick procedure, only taking 30-45 minutes
- VeinViewer lets us see any feeder veins contributing to the spider vein so we can address it and lower the chances of new spider veins popping up around the area
How to prepare for your Nd:YAG spider veins treatment
- Avoid applying any lotions or creams to the treatment area on the day of the procedure
- You may be asked to avoid taking certain medications a few days before your treatment
- Wear clothing that is loose and comfortable, such as a skirt, dress, or track pants
What to do after your spider vein laser treatment
You can get back to most of your usual activities, though you should avoid exposing the treated area to direct sunlight. We also recommend walking 30 minutes a day for at least 5 days, drinking plenty of water, avoiding strenuous activities, and elevating your legs when you can. If the area feels hot, tender, or looks red or puffy, you can apply a cooling cream or an ice pack.
Complications
Nd:YAG treatment is a low-risk procedure. However, as with any cosmetic treatment, complications can still occur. These include temporary skin redness, pain or discomfort, infection, swelling, and potential pigment changes. In very rare cases, Nd:YAG may cause burns or scarring.
We strive to make your treatment with us as safe and comfortable as possible. We’ll use cryotherapy to minimise the risk of burns. We’ll also discuss some options (such as over-the-counter pain relief, elevation, light exercise, and compression) to relieve potential side effects.
